Chickadee Nestlings

June 06, 2016

On Friday evening we were having dinner on our backyard patio when we saw a Chestnut-backed Chickadee nestling fluttering around. It evidently was the first of the brood to have fledged from the nest “box” we have up on the side of the house above the patio. The nestling had a stubby tail and obviously was not an experienced flyer nor did he seem concerned about the three human adults and two children sitting at the picnic table. At one point it even flew up onto the table and looked at us as if we were going to feed it.

The gargoly head nest box was a gift years ago. In the ten plus years we've had it up this is only the second time it has been used. You can see one of the parent birds pausing on the arch of the feeder hanger before flying up to the nest.

They would occasionally poke their head out of and look around. The parents would frequenly sit nearby and call to them trying to coax them out of the nest.
Even though the parents wanted the chicks to leave the nest they continued to feed them.
